Support Work at AkindaCo

NDIS Support Work is hands-on, day-to-day support that helps a person with disability live more independently, get out into their community, and stay connected to the people and places that matter to them. AkindaCo's NDIS Support Workers help with daily personal activities, transport, and community participation across our North Adelaide and Elizabeth bases in South Australia. We are a registered NDIS provider, registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and registered for Core Supports 107, 108 and 125. Our support workers sit inside a multidisciplinary team that includes psychotherapists, behaviour support practitioners and developmental educators, so the support you receive is informed by clinical expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an NDIS Support Worker actually do?

An NDIS Support Worker provides practical, social and emotional support to someone with disability, in line with their NDIS plan. That can mean help with daily personal activities like getting ready for the day, support with transport and getting to appointments, or being alongside someone as they go to a community group, the gym, or a social event. AkindaCo's Support Workers are trained to support each person in a way that builds their confidence and independence, not just to do tasks for them. Each plan of support is tailored to the participant's goals.

What NDIS Core Supports is AkindaCo registered for?

AkindaCo is registered for three NDIS Core Support categories. Support code 107 covers Assistance with Daily Personal Activities, including support with daily living and household routines. Support code 108 covers Assistance with Travel and Transport, helping participants get where they need to go safely and reliably. Support code 125 covers Participation in Community, Social and Civic Activities, helping participants stay connected and included. AkindaCo is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which means we meet national standards for safety, quality and conduct.

Where does AkindaCo deliver NDIS Support Work?

AkindaCo delivers NDIS Support Work across the Adelaide metropolitan area, with our two clinics located in North Adelaide and Salisbury, South Australia. Most support takes place where the participant lives, works or socialises, including in homes, schools, workplaces and community spaces. We can also offer some support in our clinics, such as where a participant attends a therapy session and needs Support Work alongside it.

Who chooses my support worker, and can I change them if it is not a good fit?

The right match between a participant and a support worker matters. AkindaCo works with participants and families to understand goals, communication preferences, sensory needs and interests before introducing a support worker. If the match does not feel right, you can ask for a different worker without it being awkward, and we will work with you to find someone who fits better. Continuity of staff is something we care about, so we aim to keep the same workers with the same participants where possible.

How is AkindaCo's Support Work different from agencies that only do support work?

AkindaCo's Support Workers sit inside a multidisciplinary allied health team. That includes art psychotherapists, family therapists, positive behaviour support practitioners and developmental educators. Support workers can draw on the wider team for advice, training and supervision, which means a participant's support is informed by clinical thinking, not just task completion. AkindaCo's Founder, Paula Gillespie, is a Specialist Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, and our Clinical Director, Shane Fotheringham, holds a Master of Clinical Family Psychotherapy.

Can self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants use AkindaCo Support Work?

Yes. AkindaCo accepts plan-managed and self-managed NDIS participants for Support Work, in line with our registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Funding for Support Work usually comes from a participant's Core Supports budget. We can talk you through how your plan applies before any sessions start, so there are no surprises. NDIS participants need active funding under the relevant Core Supports category to use their plan.

Is AkindaCo Support Work suitable for people with complex needs?

Yes. Many of the participants we support have complex needs that include neurodivergence, mental health challenges, trauma histories, or behaviours of concern. Because our Support Workers are part of a wider clinical team, they can be supported by, and trained alongside, our behaviour support and therapy practitioners. This is particularly useful for participants who have a Behaviour Support Plan in place and need support workers who understand it and follow it consistently.

How do I get started with NDIS Support Work at AkindaCo?

To get started, contact AkindaCo or complete an Expression of Interest form on our website. We will arrange an initial conversation to understand your goals, your current plan, and what kind of support would actually be useful in your week. From there we book an intake meeting, talk through staff matching, and begin support at a pace that suits you. NDIS participants need active Core Supports funding to use their plan, and we work with both plan-managed and self-managed participants.
